About
Hello — I'm Mara. This is a small, slow notebook about a single, oddly persistent creature: the unicorn. Not the pastel toy version (though I have nothing against it), but the one that turns up in medieval bestiaries, apothecary inventories, Arctic trade routes and the corners of old coats of arms.
I'm not an academic. I trained as a librarian, I read too much, and a few years ago I fell down a rabbit hole that started with a museum postcard of a tapestry and never really ended. This is where I write up what I find, mostly so I remember it, and partly in the hope that someone else finds it as quietly fascinating as I do.
The posts here are researched but informal. I try to say clearly when something is well established and when it's a nice story that historians argue about. If I've got something wrong — and with a subject this tangled, I will — please tell me. Corrections and good leads are the best kind of email to get.
